Imagine a place where cannabis grows so abundantly in the wild that it is treated as a mundane nuisance rather than a prize. For a long time, this was the reality in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. Before television and heavy influxes of global tourism arrived in the late 1990s, the locals did not typically use the plant for its psychoactive effects. Instead, farmers primarily harvested the proliferation of wild cannabis to feed their pigs, finding that it helped the livestock sleep more soundly and gain weight much faster. It was only when foreign travelers arrived and pointed out the recreational value of their 'pig feed' that the kingdom's distinct relationship with the abundant greenery began to change.
