The non-psychoactive cannabinoid compound cannabidiol induces apoptosis of glioma cells in vitro and tumor regression in vivo. It produces time-dependent activation of caspase-3, release of cytochrome c, caspase-9 and caspase-8 activation, early production of reactive oxygen species, depletion of intracellular glutathione and increased activity of glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase enzymes in glioma cells.
