This is a flanged lock nut. It’s designed to apply tension, typically on a joint that needs to have a certain amount of flex. As such, it’s mostly used on snowblower chutes and lawnmower handles. They can remain in place, but with a little vibration, will gradually lose their grip. It’s recommended that you replace this nut on your MTD outdoor power equipment if you see any signs of wear.
