In the Cappadocia region of eastern Turkey a compressed volcanic ash called tufa stone is soft enough to manipulate into materials used for building, or can easily be excavated for cave dwellings. The interior of such dwellings are highly insulated and quite comfortable across a wide thermometer range because the porous nature of the tufa makes for excellent insulation.
