Los Llanos—the rain-leached, eastern savannas of war-ravaged Colombia—are among the most brutal environments on Earth. Yet, in the 1970s, a group of idealists founded Gaviotas, a village that has reinvented sustainable living through innovative use of wind power, solar energy, and reforestation. The community transformed mild breezes into energy, developed hand pumps capable of tapping deep sources of water, and designed solar collectors efficient enough to heat and sterilize drinking water under perennially cloudy skies. Over time, the Gaviotans’ experimentation even restored an ecosystem.
