Blackberries are one of our favorite fruits for pies, cobblers and well, just about any way fruits are eaten. I used to go berry picking along local roadsides with my family. We would pick buckets of fruit and bring them home to make jams, jellies, cobblers, and pies. It was a great way to spend a summer afternoon with the kids. We'd take a picnic lunch and make a day of it. Sometimes we'd find a patch of wild blackberries that were so thick, you could barely walk through them. The berries were big and juicy, and we'd eat as many as we picked. We'd use the berries to make jams and jellies, and we'd freeze some for later use. We'd also make a big batch of blackberry dumplings or flummery, which was a favorite dessert in our household.
