After releasing two astonishing albums of original material with Fuchsia Swing Song and Contours, saxophonist Sam Rivers went and did it again with A New Conception. Recorded in 1967 during the same sessions as his groundbreaking album Dimensions, this remarkable album features seven more Rivers originals that push the boundaries of jazz composition and improvisation. Rivers deploys a unique approach to structure, creating open-ended frameworks for soloing and ensemble playing. His own playing is consistently excellent on tenor and soprano saxophones as well as flute, but so too are his bandmates. Pianist Hal Galper is a marvel throughout, bassist Herbert Lewis and drummer Steve Ellington provide a rock-solid foundation, and the group as a whole explores Rivers expansive compositions with a rare blend of discipline and daring.
