For anyone looking at starting a CBD business in the UK, there are a few things you need to know: The Food Standards Agency (FSA) have recently brought in new rules regarding the sales of CBD. All CBD products are now classed as 'Novel Food'. This means that they were not on sale or being consumed in the EU before 15th May 1997. Because of this ruling, the FSA also stated that any products being sold in the UK, must have gone through rigorous testing (including human trials, toxicology examination etc), and be submitted for approval on the FSA 'Novel Food' register. Finally, the FSA also states that only products on sale before Feb 2020 can remain on the UK market until they are awarded 'Novel Food' approval. This now makes it very difficult for new CBD businesses to start as they couldn't possibly have been on sale before this date. Many new CBD businesses are being closed down by local Trading Standards. This may well all change in the near future but as of May 2021, this is the current ruling regarding starting a new CBD business. This said, there is always the option to start a CBD company selling products like ours that are either approved or awaiting approval from the FSA.
