Humic acid is a group of molecules that bind to help plant roots receive water and nutrients. It is 'created' as a 'medium' for transporting nutrients from soil to the plant because they hold onto ionized ( Iron & Magnesium) nutrients, preventing them from leaching away. Humic acid is also attracted to the depletion zone of the plant root, they bring along water and nutrients the plant needs.
