They are all good questions, but I think we need to back up and ask this question first: SHOULD we teach sight words in preschool? First of all, let’s clarify what sight words are. Some people think sight words are words that are hard to sound out. But it's more accurate to say that sight words are words that readers know instantly, without needing to sound them out. The goal is to help children recognize these words automatically, which frees up their brain power to focus on harder words. It's important to remember that sight words are not always decodable or phonetically regular. Some are, like 'the' and 'and', but others aren't, like 'said' and 'was'. That's why they're often referred to as 'high-frequency words'.
