Description

A.k.a. smooth rose mallow. A lovely native hibiscus closely related to the better known swamp rose mallow. A wetland species, it can adapt to mesic soils but should not be allowed to dry out. Tolerates light shade, but flowers best in full sun. In optimal conditions, it will slowly form colonies by reseeding. Light: Full sun to partial shade. Root Type: Taproot. Notable Wildlife Interactions: Flowers attract mainly bumblebees, including an obligate species. Host the painted lady and grey hairstreak butterflies, the checkered skipper, moths such as the pearly wood nymph, yellow scallop, and io, and some smaller insects. Occasionally browsed by mammals.
