Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) is a very common autoimmune disease of the thyroid. In addition to genetic background, several viruses, including herpesviruses, have been suggested to play a role in the pathogenesis. Among these, human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) has been associated with HT. This chapter investigates the involvement of HHV-6 in the modulation of peripheral natural killer (NK) cells in HT patients. The study focuses on the CD3−CD56brightCD16− NK cell subset, which is known for its immunoregulatory properties and cytokine production. The findings suggest a significant increase in this NK cell subset in HT patients, particularly those with active HHV-6 infection, indicating a potential role of HHV-6 in shaping the immune response in HT. The results highlight the complex interplay between viral infection and autoimmune reactions, providing new insights into the pathogenesis of HT.
