Description
CB1 cannabinoid receptors appear to mediate most, if not all of the psychoactive effects of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and related compounds. This G protein-coupled receptor has a characteristic distribution in the nervous system: It is particularly abundant in the central nervous system, but is also found in the peripheral nervous system. The localization of CB1 receptors has been studied extensively using a variety of techniques, including autoradiography, immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization. These studies have revealed that CB1 receptors are present in regions of the brain associated with the control of movement, memory, and cognition, as well as in regions involved in the processing of pain and emotional information.
