This activity will review the laws relevant to the state of Florida regarding the prescribing and dispensing of controlled substances, utilization of the state’s prescription drug monitoring program, and the assessment of prescriptions for appropriateness including methods for detecting prescription fraud. Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to identify provisions of Florida law related to the prescribing and dispensing of controlled substances, discuss appropriate counseling points for patients receiving opioid therapy, specify the legal requirements in regards to Florida’s prescription drug monitoring program E-FORCSE, recognize how to assess prescriptions for therapeutic value and detect prescriptions not based on legitimate medical purpose, identify resources for proper patient storage and disposal of controlled substances, describe a pharmacist’s role in ensuring access to controlled substances for all patients with a valid prescription, and recognize the relevance of the Florida standing order for treatment resources.
