Description
London's Financial District is a showcase of impressive architecture and powerful institutions representing the finance and insurance industry. Few people know that these very same buildings were at the heart of the transatlantic slave trade for hundreds of years. On this walk, we'll explore the hidden legacy of slavery in the heart of the City of London, from the Royal Exchange to the Bank of England, and discuss the ways in which the profits of the slave trade helped finance the growth of the British Empire. We'll also visit the site of the first African church in London, and discuss the role of London in the abolitionist movement. You'll come away with a deeper understanding of this transformative period in British history. We will start near the Guildhall and finish the walk with a visit to the Slavery and Sugar gallery of the Docklands museum. This will provide us with a detailed insight into the management of plantations and the many layers of the campaign for the abolition of the slave trade and slavery in 1809 and 1833. We'll come away with a greater understanding of the legacy of slavery in the UK through the continuing story of the Windrush Generation.
